TyranoBuilder – Kopanda01 Theme for English TB v1.7+

Ko10panda is a Japanese creator of some amazing TyranoBuilder addons and themes. If I understand correctly, even having some of their themes added officially to the program’s most recent (v1.7) release.

One theme they made that is not included with TyranoBuilder is “Kopanda 01”, a lovely dark theme with menu buttons that glow gold on mouseover.

Ko10panda’s original is still available to download on their blog, Fancy Curves, but some elements (such as main menu buttons) are entirely in Japanese, the menu code doesn’t work with the latest TB version (v1.7+) and the format is not such that it can be used like the default themes (i.e. by just dropping it into the “data\others\plugin\” folder) but rather requires overwriting your project files.

Since I wanted to use this theme myself, I have taken it upon myself to translate and update it.

I’ve translated the buttons that were previously in Japanese to English (also making them transparent PNG files instead of GIF files, so they may be re-positioned if desired and still look correct). I’ve also updated the “menu.html” file to use the newer code and use the new buttons, and added an optional plugins.ks file makes installing the theme in a new project super easy.

To install the theme in your TyranoBuilder (v1.7+) project, just unzip the download and put the “theme_kopanda_01” folder in your project’s “data\others\plugin\” folder. Then either replace your project’s plugins.ks file (found in “data\scenario\system\”) with the one included or edit yours by hand following the instructions in “readme_1st.txt”.

I hope ko10panda is okay with me translating and posting this, as I could only read the original theme’s terms and conditions via Google Translate, which state:

  • Modification is free. There is no particular restriction.
  • Usage report and credit notation are optional.
  • Redistribute and sell the material itself, say your own comments, do not steal it.

Hopefully I understand this correctly to mean modifying the theme and sharing it is okay, so long as it’s not sold, I don’t claim it is my own work and that I credit ko10panda for making it originally.

It also means that anyone wanting to use this should be okay to do so in any project, even commercial (though I’d advise double-checking with ko10panda if you’re going to be selling your game, just to be sure). Crediting ko10panda (and myself, for the edits) is optional but probably only polite.

If ko10panda does have a problem with me posting this, just let me know and I will remove it from my blog or add any other credit desired.

TyranoBuilder – Backlog Button in Menu

Thanks to jay_rab’s excellent guide here, I was able to add new buttons to the default menu in TyranoBuilder.

It’s not difficult, but requires careful editing of some files in your TyranoBuilder game’s project folders. So, to make it easier for those who just want to add a Backlog button to their menus (the subject of the above-mentioned guide and a popular feature request on the TyranoBuilder forums), I have attached my already-edited files below.

Also included is a rough attempt at a Backlog button matching the style of the default TyranoBuilder menu buttons. I wish I knew what font was used for the originals to match them better, though! 😦

To use these in your own TyranoBuilder project, just unzip the file inside your project folder, overwriting when asked.

Note that if you have already edited your menu.html, lang.js or kag.menu.js files, these will overwrite your changes… but if you already know how to do that, you probably don’t want or need my files anyway!

TyranoBuilder – Blank Default Buttons

This is just something I whipped up quickly to share with the TyranoBuilder community, to aid anyone wanting to make their own menu or UI buttons but keep the “default” style/appearance.

These button images are simple edits of the default menu buttons used by TyranoBuilder when creating a new project, so copyright for them remains the same as using any default elements provided by TyranoBuilder; i.e. they are usable in any project, commercial or otherwise, but that only applies to games made using TyranoBuilder.

Buttons:

ui_button_old_blank

menu_button_old_blank

menu_button_jp_blank

menu_button_blank

menu_button_tutorial_blank

Top to bottom: UI Button (pre-v1.7), Menu Button (pre-v1.7), Title Button (Japanese), Menu Button (v1.7+), Title Button (TB official tutorial).

To download, just right-click and “save as” the images above.

For a tutorial on editing menus and adding custom menu buttons, go here.

Although a very simple resource, hopefully these come in handy for some folks getting started with TyranoBuilder, which is a fairly intuitive “WYSIWYG” program for creating your own visual novel style games.

TyranoBuilder is available to buy (on Steam only, currently) here.
